This self-guided walking tour takes you from Hauptbahnhof to Alexanderplatz, passing through the most iconic landmarks of the historic center. Starting Point: Hauptbahnhof
Our city walk begins at Berlin’s central station, the Hauptbahnhof. Opened in 2006, this glass-and-steel structure is one of the largest train stations in Europe, a symbol of a reunified Berlin looking toward the future. Before heading into the historic heart of the city, take a moment to admire its architecture: clean lines, natural light flooding the entire structure, and a maze of levels that already hints at the mix of order and movement so characteristic of Berlin. Following the Spree river, you enter the government quarter, the Regierungsviertel. Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz
A short walk from Unter den Linden brings you to Gendarmenmarkt, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Two almost-identical cathedrals, French and German, frame the Konzerthaus at its center, offering a rare architectural symmetry in a city that suffered heavily from World War II bombing.
Not far from there lies Bebelplatz, a quieter but equally striking square. This is where one of the Nazi regime’s book burnings took place in 1933, an event remembered today by a haunting memorial: an empty library, buried beneath a glass panel in the ground, made of empty shelves that hold exactly the number of books burned that night.

Just steps from Bebelplatz stands St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, recognizable by its circular dome inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. It’s the oldest Catholic church in Berlin since the Protestant Reformation, a discreet but important testament to the city’s religious diversity over the centuries.

Museum Island alone brings together five major museums, connected in recent years by the James-Simon-Galerie, a modern entrance designed by architect David Chipperfield that now serves as the gateway to the entire site. The Neues Museum houses one of Berlin’s most famous pieces, the bust of Nefertiti. I’ll admit it’s one of my favorite photo spots in Berlin: the atmosphere is wonderful, green, shaded, unique from every angle. The Altes Museum, with its colonnaded facade inspired by ancient Greek architecture, displays classical art collections. Right next door, the imposing silhouette of the Berliner Dom, Berlin’s Protestant cathedral, dominates the island with its baroque dome. Museum Island is definitely the highlight of this walking tour through central Berlin.
Humboldt Forum
Facing Museum Island stands the Humboldt Forum, a reconstruction of Berlin’s royal palace, destroyed after World War II. This hybrid building, faithful to the original baroque architecture on three facades yet boldly contemporary on the fourth, now houses ethnological and art collections, embodying on its own the tensions and choices running through today’s Berlin between preserving the past and embracing modernity.
Alexanderplatz, the Final Stop
Our walk ends at Alexanderplatz, one of the liveliest squares in Berlin, instantly recognizable thanks to the Fernsehturm, the TV tower that dominates the city’s skyline. Once the heart of socialist East Berlin, the square has retained some of its era’s architecture while becoming today an essential shopping and tourist hub.
